Why I'm Besotted in Helping Small Business Owners (Mum This One's for You)
It was around 1999, we were driving down Oxford St in Paddington, and I said to my sister, “You see all these shops—they are all going to need a website one day.”
Cut to: 2011 and Magicdust was featured in the BRW as the 76th fastest growing company in Australia. I was 37. We had built about 4000 websites for small businesses at that point. Affordable websites you could update yourself. No one else was doing.
I love helping these people—they’re just like my mum, she owned her own business since I was born.
I took it personally to run the support desk for years understanding people’s needs and where they were getting stuck. I also ensured our team were trained in communicating in low tech, friendly ways and were 110% preemptive. Just like helping your mum.
People would always say to me, “I don’t know how you do it, you are so patient. Thanks for helping me understand all this technology.”
There’s something about a person who trusts themselves enough to not work for ‘the man.’
Small business owners are creative, courageous and resilient. 😎
Even back then I believed in the power of entrepreneurship at the grassroots level. My mum would never have called herself an entrepreneur. She was just doing her: creating, hustling and surviving.
The ‘reveal’ on listening to anyone’s business idea never gets old to me. I champion everything about what it takes to make a dream real.
To the stars, more soon.✈️
P.S Thanks for reading these frequent posts while I’m blitzing out 30 days of writing. I’m levelling up my communication skills so I can help even more rockstar business owners.
